Summary of the Butoh Clown workshop in February

Writer: Miriam StrasserMiriam Strasser

From February 7 to 9, I held an exciting workshop in collaboration with the red carpet for young art (@red.carpet.art.award) and the association “Kunstgeberei” at the Kultur Anker Zentrum Schlingermarkt!

It was an intensive weekend full of creativity, laughter, expressiveness, depth, absurdity and transformation with 6 curious participants. In addition to the practical exercises, there was an introductory presentation with theoretical and neuroscientific input on Butoh dance and clowning.

The next Butoh-Clown-Workshop will take place in cooperation with the cultural association “VADA” from 17. - 19. of October 2025 at "Kulturraum Ventil" (@ventilspace) in Klagenfurt!

Here is some final feedback from the participants:

„If you're a person with a vague notion to take the course, do it. At the very least, you'll learn to enjoy feeling like an idiot, which, while very freeing in our stifling world, is also the foundation of confidence. You'll discover a part of yourself you'll be glad to meet.“

"The mostly playful, yet at times deeply profound exercises came together over the course of 2.5 days like puzzle pieces—forming a platform on which one could move, look beyond the edge, even leap, and expand its space. With great sensitivity, humor, and energy, Miriam created a wonderful atmosphere where all participants opened up, explored, and shared their experiences with each other. The moments of reflection, as well as the insights into the backgrounds of Butoh and Clowning, were perfectly timed—either to prepare for new impulses or to deepen what had already been experienced. I felt incredibly comfortable. It was an intense time full of inspiration for further exploration and expansion (!)—an experience that moved me both internally and externally."

„If you're into physical culture, go to this workshop because you'll learn a new framework at the very least. Miriam is an incredibly confident, and rightly so, teacher of her Butoh-Clown style, which she couples very well with a supreme concern for those participating in the workshop. Go for it, be curious.“

„Thank you for the workshop. It was a perfect combination of getting out of the comfort zone and having joy!“

"You did an amazing job with team-building! I never thought I could develop such a deep connection with a group of strangers in such a short time."

"It was wonderful to immerse myself in this state of awareness and mindfulness. Throughout the entire weekend, I felt like I was performing—not in the sense of a staged act, but because I experienced the magic of awareness in every movement and action."
